4 "Boy Mom" Books to Help You Feel A Little Less Crazy

I'll never forget the sight I saw at 20 weeks into my first pregnancy.

As we settled into our "anatomy scan" appointment, laying there draped with paper and anticipation of what our future would behold, I couldn't help but WANT A BOY first.

Being the oldest of 4, and the ONLY GIRL in our family, I had always dreamed of what it would be like to have an OLDER brother.

I even went as far as to wish I had a twin brother!

Something about having a protector. Someone who would always be looking out for me.

My husband shared my desire for a BOY FIRST.

Being the youngest of 3 and ONLY BOY, he was fully hoping for a boy to start off the lineup in our home.

So, as we sat there awaiting that magic wand to wave over that perfect "spot"...BOY was on our mind!

Without hesitation, question, or pause....our hopes were revealed with a VERY OBVIOUS view of our son in all his "glory"!!

Little did we know that we would sit in that exact same place FOUR MORE TIMES and see that "glory shot" EACH AND EVERY TIME!!!

FIVE BOYS is sometimes hard to swallow as we look ahead at the road the Lord has prepared for us, but we know that he has placed each one of these boys into our care for a reason.

HOWEVER, it is NOT EASY.

IN FACT, it can make you feel a little CRAZY (let's be honest...A LOT CRAZY most days)

As a "boy mom", I have had to come to the conclusion that..
  • boys THINK differently than me
  • boys REACT differently than me
  • boys have ULTERIOR MOTIVES
  • boys are LOUD
  • boys have MORE ENERGY than I ever will
  • boys are JUST DIFFERENT

And so, I began to equip myself with wisdom from others who have been there and survived!

And it didn't hurt to realize I wasn't along in this Boy Mom journey...

These 4 Books helped me see my world as a little less crazy...and a little more normal.

Upon the arrival of BOY #1, "Bringing Up Boys" by Dr. James Dobson was given to us as a gift. Being a new "boy mom," this book allowed me to see the boy world through the eyes of another boy...a boy who grew up  to be a godly, wise, & respected man who raised sons to know Jesus.

This book allowed my eyes to be opened to the fact that there is standard to which the Bible holds men VERSES the standards that the world holds them to. This wisdom was truly a gift as my husband and I started out our journey of raising boys as we desired to hold them to the standards of the Bible and prayerfully raise them into godly men.

When we found out BOY #2 was on the way, I bought "Praying for Boys" by Brooke McGlothlin for myself to read in anticipation of being a certified "boy mom." I wanted to get a head start on making prayer over my boys part of my everyday...part of the quite time I spent with the Lord.

Written specifically for the boys in your life, the scripts at the end of each chapter allow you to "insert" your child's name and pray over them.

This is NOT A ONE TIME READ! The value of this book is that you can pray the words over each boy you are raising, in every season they are facing, and even into their adulthood! Plus, the wisdom from this boy mom couldn't be more spot on!

I realized quickly that being a mom, and especially a mom to boys, that I had an anger problem. I let Idols build up in my heart that I didn't even realize were there, and the explosive nature of my anger became an issue in my heart and in my home.

"Triggers" by Amber Lia & Wendy Speake could not have come into my life at a better time! With the news that we were expecting #3 & #4 TWIN BOYS, again, I bought this book for myself as a weapon to fight against the anger that I had been dealing with as I raised JUST 2 boys in hopes to overcome the anger when I would have 4 boys!

Again, I don't believe this is a one time read. As we are about to welcome our FIFTH BOY into our home this year, this book will surely be put back into the rotation!

When we welcomed our TWIN BOYS home, a dear friend of mine gifted me with a book with the title of my new reality: "Im Outnumbered" by Laura Lee Groves.

Written by a fellow boy mom, who successfully survived raising her 4 boys, who are all grown, I was able to catch a glimpse into what my future would hold. I began to see that I WASN'T CRAZY for thinking the things I thought about my boys. I WASN'T the only one dealing with the "boy mom" issues, AND I was able to see how running my household in a organized, intentional, and sacrificial manner would one day BENEFIT my boys as they entered into adulthood.

AND my favorite part - She interview HER GROWN BOYS at the end of the book! I loved hearing their perspective on growing up with ALL BROTHERS, and couldn't help but think about our 5 boys as grown men talking about THEIR childhood!!

Equipping ourselves, as moms (and dads) who are raising our boys to become godly men and leaders in their homes one day, is SO VERY important!

However, if we are feeding ourselves knowledge, but not implementing and feeding that knowledge in our sons lives and hearts, then we aren't fully meeting the spiritual needs in our home.

If we want to see their little hearts grow and change (as we are seeking to grow and change our own hearts in the process), starting EARLY with spiritual conversations is CRITICAL!

These books have been wonderful tools in our home as we have sought to intentionally welcome spiritual conversation into our everyday with our boys.

Hopefully, you'll add these books to your library and will pull from the wisdom within the pages often.
